The Money Pit

Pat Rioux and Jennifer Rioux

THE MONEY PIT (1986), a loosely based remake of MR. BLANDINGS BUILDS HIS DREAMHOUSE, tells the story of a young couple in dire need of a place to reside in a hurry. Though they seem focused on getting another apartment in New York City, a boyhood friend of Walter Fielding (Tom Hanks) convinces him to consider a bargain of a house in the suburbs an hour away from the city. Josh Mostel portrays Jack Schmittman, a real estate agent, as a guy who knows a good deal when he sees it. But is this 'steal' really a 'rip-off'?

Walter joins the out-of-shape Jack as he is walking the track at his health club and gets the pitch on a one million dollar home that is on the market for just $200,000..... but only until Friday. When Walter is suspicious of a deal that seems too good to be true, Jack tells him "The point is you get to capitalize on a fellow human being's misfortune. It's the basis of real estate." Then Jack's heart starts to act up and he is on his way to the hospital via an ambulance, but he still manages to put his hand out to shake Walter's hand and say "Have we got a deal?"

Walter's girlfriend, Anna Crowley (Shelley Long), and he venture out to the suburbs to see this "price reduced for quick sale" house . We learn that it is a distressed sale because Estelle (Maureen Stapleton) must raise money quickly because her husband of 25 years is going to be extradited from Paraguay and she needs money for the 'blood-sucking' lawyers. It turns out that her husband, Carlos, was Hitler's pool man.

After Walter and Anna move in to the house, the front door falls off the hinges, a staircase collapses, a bathtub falls through the floor, and walls fall down. And that is just the beginning. A steady stream of carpenters, plumbers, and electricians appear at the house to make renovations, all the while telling the homeowners that everything will take just take two weeks. The contractors constantly demand cash advances before they drive away in their expensive cars. Just when we think the house will never be finished, in true Hollywood fashion, we have the happy ending as Walter and Anna have their wedding and reception at their beautiful, newly renovated home.
