Lethal Weapon 3

Pat Rioux and Jennifer Rioux

Lethal Weapon 3 Joe Pesci's portrayal of real estate agent Leo Goetz in LETHAL WEAPON 3 (1992) reveals a fast- talking, tough short guy who knows how to bend rules. He is fond of telling us that "anything you need, Leo gets... get it?" Leo became friends with cop partners Riggs and Murtaugh (played by Mel Gibson and Danny Glover) in Lethal Weapon 2 when he was placed in protective custody while testifying as a star witness in a drug and money laundering case. How he transforms from money launderer to real estate agent isn't explained in the movie; we are told that it is a long story.

We know that Leo has his fingers in a lot of things though as he quips that he is "in real estate now" in one of his many inquiries to police and medical staff, "You own your own home?" Another time Leo tells one of the cops working, "Hey Murphy - now is the time to buy - Goetz Realty."

LETHAL WEAPON 3 is a story about a bad cop turned real estate developer who is involved in the illegal sale of arms to L.A. gang members. Riggs and Murtaugh have to crack the case while dodging bullets and running from explosions typically seen in this series of action thrillers. Murtaugh is just days away from a planned retirement which should be no surprise to us, considering the madman risk-taking antics of his partner, Riggs. Leo Goetz is Murtaugh's real estate broker.

Leo tells a young couple seeing the home that the inside is better than the outside as he rushes them along the driveway. When the young woman remarks on the beautiful picture window, Leo tells them about the drug dealer who crashed through it and shot up the whole place. He reacts to their shocked looks by telling them "Listen, I have to tell you these things, I mean, it's the law. It's called full disclosure."

When Murtaugh flies into a rage over their hasty departure, Leo tells him, "They weren't going to buy the house anyway because they couldn't even afford the financing." He laments again about full disclosure and Riggs mentions the new hobby room built over the garage. This prompts Leo to ask about a permit and the offer a quick solution: "You know what I'll do. Leo is here. I'll take care of it; we'll get some backdated permits... I'll make a couple of calls." Another time Leo announces in a loud and obnoxious tone to Murtaugh, "You're in trouble - you've got termites- you're infested - the only thing holding up the house is the paint!"

But Leo's style is big and bold whether it is good news or bad. Proud as a peacock, he bursts into the house announcing "I have sold this turkey, this termite-infested dump is now gone. All you have to do is sign the contract before the suckers change their minds, okay? Okay?"

Murtaugh tells him that he has changed his mind about retiring and the house is now off the market. Leo is mad but decides since he is partners with Murtaugh, there is no commission but he wants money for two tires blown out of his Mercedes when Riggs, the madman, put bullets in them to keep Leo from joining them in a pursuit of the bad guys.

Leo annoys us and Murtaugh and Riggs with his loud and obnoxious demeanor yet we can't help but be charmed by his enthusiasm and sense of urgency. His maneuvering around rules and ethical behavior is rooted in his loyalty to Murtaugh and his family.
