Left Brainers, Right Brainers, No Brainers
Rob Peck is founder and CEA (Creative Education Advocate), of Zestworks, a speaking, training and consulting firm which believes that "The best is zest!" His speeches have raised morale, reinvigorated commitment and reinforced the power of collaborative problem solving from the campus of Harvard University to the offices of Hewlett-Packard.
Peck had the extraordinary challenge recently of giving a presentation at the Massachusetts Association of Realtors annual convention on September 11, 2001, shortly after attendees became aware of the tragedy at the World Trade Center towers in New York City.
His message about the value of humor in the balancing act of a busy life and in coping with the stresses that realtors face in their daily business routine was confounded by the morning's tragic events. Although the audience responded with soft laughter at some of the examples of ways to improve our emotional intelligence, we paid special attention to the touching stories about our families and friendships. It was a time to reflect about what was important to us but still remember that Peck believes, "Laughter is like leavening..... it helps heavy spirits rise (and it's fat-free)!
Peck and a friend, John Porcino, devised a list of goals to help us all RECHARGE:
- R: Remember the Vision
- Stay connected to the hopes and visions that nurture a healthy and optimistic outlook.
- Quote: "Never underestimate the power of love" from Life's Little Lessons
- Suggestion: Create a " Vision Statement for your work. Hang it on your wall -- then strive to align your deeds to your creeds.
- E: Energize your Spirits
- Do what brings you joy in your life. Both at home and in your work.
- Quote: "She who laughs, lasts!" Robert Fulghum
- Suggestion: Create a humor bulletin board.
- C: Count Your Blessings
- Relish the riches in your life, small pleasures, delicious food, magical moments, lingering sunsets, homemade brownies...
- Quote: "For all that has been - thanks!!...For all that will be - yes" Hammarskjold
- Suggestion: Keep a "Little Blessings Journal" which you add to periodically and read when you need a lift.
- H: Hone a skill
- Work on an old skill and/or learn a new one. Remember the challenges and exhilaration of learning something new.
- Quote: "The single best way to improve your mental health is to up the risk in your life." Sid Simon
- Suggestion: Take the risk to learn something you never thought you could.
- A: Aim for Excellence, Not Perfection
- Strive in all you do to make beauty. Forgive (even love) the imperfections in yourself and others.
- Quote: "Remember that we are all 'perfectly imperfect."
- Suggestion: With courage and kindness, finish the unfinished business in your relationships.
- R: Relax, Revive and Renew
- Rejuvenate in the sunshine with a book and a tall glass of iced tea.
- Quote: "Stressed spelled backwards is desserts."
- Suggestion: Make a list of relaxation arts to hang on your fridge.
- G: Ground in your spiritual practice
- Inspire and nurture your inner journey
- Quote: "It is only with the heart that one can see rightly what is essential is invisible to the eye."
The Little Prince
- Suggestion: Practice Random Acts of Kindness and Senseless Acts of Beauty
- E: Exercise
- Revitalize your body. Clear your brain.
- Quote: "Carpe Creakdom" (seize the stretch)
- Suggestion: Keep a baker's dozen list of physical activities you love taped to the dash of your car. Include some you don't often think of: jump roping, clog dancing, etc. Got 5 Minutes? Do one.
Peck reminds us of a quote from Marianne Williamson, "Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that frightens us. We ask ourselves who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous and talented? Actually, who are you not to be?
Your playing small doesn't help anyone. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. As we let our light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."
