America's Most Misspelled Towns
"It's Pittsburgh with an 'h'" says ePodunk.com, the Ithaca, New York-based web site that believes in "The Power of Place." Their recent study, based on 25,000 search entries on their web site, enabled them to compile the list of most commonly misspelled towns and cities in America.
The citizens of Pittsburgh fought hard to put that 'h' back on their city's name, according to ePodunk. In 1890, the U.S. Board on Geographic Names ruled that the final "h" should be dropped from the names of all cities and towns ending in "burg" and Pittsburgh became 'Pittsburg.'
Pittsburghers mounted a campaign to restore the 'h' to their city name and the board relented in 1911 so 'Pittsburg' became Pittsburgh once again. But people are still confused today - enough so that their city earned the top spot on ePodunk's list of the most misspelled cities and towns in America:
- Pittsburgh, PA
- Tucson, AZ
- Cincinnati, OH
- Albuquerque, NM
- Culpeper, VA
- Asheville, NC
- Worcester, MA
- Manhattan, NY
- Phoenix, AZ
- Niagara Falls, NY
- Fredericksburg, VA
- Philadelphia, PA
- Detroit, MI
- Chattanooga,TN
- Gloucester, MA
According to their web site, ePodunk Inc. celebrates the cultural diversity and heritage of America's 28,000 home towns and is the leading provider of information about place in the United States. Its database contains detailed profiles of 28,000 cities, towns, villages, and hamlets.
CEO Laurie Bennett and her team have culled facts from thousands of off-beat sources: their site lists a community's well-known residents and movies that were filmed in the area, along with a wealth of information on local history, festivals, parks, museums, bookstores, school districts, and much more. The site also includes more than 1,000 literary quotations about places, and it gives visitors an opportunity to send and receive free on-line vintage postcards.
