Independent Realty Firms Still Outrank Franchises

According to data collected by the National Association of REALTORS®, independent realty firms still outrank national franchises in number. Only 22 percent of the real estate agencies were associated with a franchise in 1999 (most recent data available), reports NAR Senior Economist Kevin A. Roth. The vast majority of real estate firms are 'mom and pop' stores or small family-owned brokerages.

Although the real estate industry currently has room for independents and franchises, and large and small firms, the rapidly changing marketplace means that companies are debating whether to join franchises for the big advertising budget and name recognition or become a niche player in the market and advertise to a particular market or specialize in a particular type of property sales.

Although the vast majority of member firms are small family-owned companies, some of the independent companies compete with the large franchises as top-producing firms with high volume sales. The top 25 independent agencies, based on number of sides of transactions closed, according to The REALTOR Magazine Top 100 are:
