Much needed disaster training for building professionals will now be available through a new organization, the Disaster Contractors Network (DCN), launched at the Southeast Building Conference in Orlando, Florida recently. This public-private partnership provides critical training to building professionals on how to provide specialized services to homeowners after disaster strikes. In addition to helping homeowners, DCN will also help builders and contractors minimize their losses when disaster strikes.
Many Dade County, Florida homeowners had to deal with a lack of contractors and shoddy workmanship after suffering through the destruction and devastation of Hurricane Andrew in 1992. Builders and officials in the state hope to connect thousands of contractors in the state with the state's emergency management system to help homeowners find licensed and reliable builders and contractors after a storm.
The effects from disasters can last for months or even years. DCN will provide contractors with the information and resources they need to help their customers successfully repair or rebuild their home after a disaster strikes. DCN members will have an added edge in the marketplace, having trained for disasters and being connected with online resources.
Online training sessions for builders and contractors teach them how to storm-proof homes and provide insight on how to deal with the havoc of storms and coping with customers whose lives have been destroyed. Customers will be reminded to take three bids from contractors and seek out contractors who meet licensing requirements.
The Disaster Contractors Network will provide members with:
- A state-of-the-art website that provides an informative interactive learning experience. Located on this site are:
- Downloadable brochures that can be customized with each member company's logo and distributed to potential clients and construction professionals.
- Online training with Continuing Education Units (CEU's) offered through Florida State University.
- Helpful resource links to state and federal agencies, professional organizations and nonprofits.
- A virtual Emergency Operations Center (EOC) that will link members to the state's disaster response system.
- Marketing materials, including press and advertising tools.
DCN is a unique partnership of the Associated Builders and Contractors of Florida (ABC), Florida Roofing, Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors Association (FRSA), Association of General Contractors (AGC), Florida Home Builders Association (FHBA), Center for Risk Policy in association with the Florida Public Affairs Center at Florida State University, and the Florida Department of Community Affairs.
